The Magic of TikTok for the Ocean

TikTok is a video-focused social networking service owned by the Chinese company ByteDance Ltd. heard. Short user videos of various genres ranging from 15 seconds to 10 minutes are possible, including pranks, stunts, tricks, jokes, dance and entertainment. By using this platform, there are many influential people who have worked to make a difference and make the world a better place. Whether it's gender equality or the protection of the sea, it's all important. "From August 26 to September 9, TikTok users can apply an ocean effect that lets them virtually “clean plastic” out of the ocean. For every video uploaded with the hashtag #SaveOurOceans, TikTok will donate $2 to Conservation International to help save 3,000 square kilometers of ocean (up to $100,000)."(TikTok, 2019). Even the slightest effort can depend on monumental change.

Elizabeth Sheer from New York posted a video on TikTok to encourage others to remove cigarette butts and bottles from the beach but didn't expect this to work. However, after one of her videos spread by word of mouth, she became the face of global cleanup, removing nearly 800,000 pieces from public spaces around the world in 10 days. She later became the frontwoman of the European Parliament campaign for World Oceans Day. Another popular TikToker, Shane Brown, is a marine photographer with about 8 million followers watching his video collecting trash from Hawaii's oceans and sharing educational content on marine life and marine conservation. It's home. He is working to improve the quality of life at sea.

The sea contains more than 97% of the world's water. The sea covers about 71% of the earth and contains over 1 billion cubic kilometers of water! A healthy sea regulates the climate and reduces the effects of climate change. Ocean currents disperse heat around the world and regulate temperature and weather. The ocean plays an important role in food security, accounting for 20% of the world's animal protein consumption and more than 50% in many developing countries. Coastal and marine tourism dominates world tourism as people flock to the beauty of the sea. Without them, humanity begins to lose many of the resources we have become dependent on.

What impact will ocean pollution have on us if it is not stopped?

  Pollution in Our Oceans – I want to advocate for the protection of our oceans and the sea life within it. This is an issue the affects everyone and everything throughout the world and is something that can truly cause loss of animal and plant life all throughout our oceans. “Marine debris is a persistent pollution problem that reaches throughout the entire ocean and Great Lakes.” (NOAA, 2020). According to Spring Power and Gas, there are nine types of ocean pollution; those being garbage, sunscreen and other topicals, oil seepage, sewage, agricultural and aquaculture runoff, industrial waste, eutrophication, carbon dioxide, and noise. Impact of Ocean Pollution on Humans, Sea Life, and the Environment

Ocean pollution is such a broad topic, there are so many different parts of it and all the have different effects on the environment, humans, and sea life. Ocean pollution occurs when substances used or spread by humans enter the ocean and cause harmful effects there. “Ocean pollution is a complex mixture made up of mercury, plastic waste, manufactured chemicals, petroleum wastes, agricultural runoff, and biological threats, like harmful algal blooms.” ( Avakian , n.d.)  There are many solutions to issues that are occurring that are causing this terrible pollution, we just must take the time to fix said issues.
